Setting up a business

Setting up a business

Setting up a business in the Stockholm region is a straightforward process. The business establishment system is transparent and includes simple procedures. Your new company can be fully functional within two to three weeks.

What type of business set-up is right for your needs?

A foreign-based company setting up an enterprise in the Stockholm region will most likely choose one of two common business structures:

  • Subsidiary – a limited liability company (in Swedish: aktiebolag)
  • Branch (in Swedish: filial)

Subsidiary or branch?

A subsidiary, or limited liability company is a legal entity incorporated in Sweden. A branch is not incorporated in Sweden but is a divisional office – part of a foreign limited company – organized to conduct business in Sweden.

Most foreign investors who set up a business in Sweden opt for a limited liability company. Swedish legislation has long accepted limited liability companies with a sole owner (wholly owned subsidiaries), enabling not only large corporations but also small businesses to utilize this format.
